Cosmopolitan Korea had a pictorial and an interview with Yoo Yeon Seok for its January 2016 issue. YeoNiverse is now presenting to you the summary of a few of his interview answers (but not in order) for you to read ❤

A man who works tirelessly throughout the year. A man who choose work over rest. A man who wants to concentrate on himself than any other. That man is actor Yoo Yeon Seok and he is about to welcome his first movie in 2016, <The Mood That Day>.

 photo Photo 1_1.jpg

Q: You have been working continuously the last few years. You did dramas and movies one after another. And when you actually have a chance to take a breath, still you said that you want to do a musical. Somewhat it makes Yoo Yeon Seok as a person who works without a break.

In his answer Yoo Yeon Seok said he’s always yearning to do stage performances. He said he can’t forget the positive energy that he got when he was doing performance at school. And it’s not easy to have the opportunity to do full-scale acting on the stage.

Q: I’m so curious so I watched your musical “The Man Who Passed through the walls”. But I’m surprised. The song is well composed and the diction is great.

Yoo Yeon Seok said he is so thankful for the praise. He said actually he is not a person who can brag about his singing skill. “Compared with other musical actors/actresses, I’m nothing. I just thought that I have to deliver the dialogues and the feeling of the character. So more than singing, I put the character Dutilleul’s feeling into the melody.”

2

Q: But you must be confident in singing to declare that you want to challenge the musical

Yoo Yeon Seok answered that musical was his hobby. He didn’t do it because he got special training. “There are some musical that I like and I had great longing for musical.” He also said that he feel so thankful he meet with the good project as his first musical.

3

Q: Movie “The Mood That Day” will be released in January. I heard YeonSeok-ssi’s role ‘Jae Hyeon’ is a person who say “let’s sleep with me today” to the woman he meets for the first time. After he tossed the statement that close with sexual harrasment, I’m curious if they finally sleep together or not.

Yoo Yeon Seok : “Please check by yourself in cinema haha. The Mood That Day is the movie about a man named Jae Hyeon who enjoys one night stand and Moon Chae Won ssi’ role ‘Soo Jeong’, a woman who has the opposite nature with him. They meet by fate in ktx, then various episodes will begin. How their destiny in the end and how they will get connected, you will know if you watch the movie”

4

Q: Honestly, do you ever have experience to fall in love at the first sight like in the movie

Yoo Yeon Seok answered he never experienced falling in love at the first sight. But he did want to try talking to a woman who passed by. “In the past, I like that woman but I couldn’t bring my self to talk with her. I kept thinking about her all day. Even the next few days, I kept thinking about her and I regretted (that I didn’t ask her)” So if the same occasion happens to him in the future he decides to say “I like you, and if now I don’t ask for your phone number I think I’ll regret it”

[Photo] 6

Q: I’m curious on what point to make Yoo Yeon Seok fall in love?

Yoo Yeon Seok said every person have different charms but outgoing persons who have the same interest are not many. And he still said the woman who has a beautiful smile, but he couldn’t explain how to smile like that.

[Photo] 7

Yoo Yeon Seok also talked about love in this interview, as translated by Soompi :

In the interviews that followed the pictorial shoot, he talked about his ideal kind of love. He said, “I think that someone who really loves me will love my incompleteness and faults as well. For example, when my hair looks awful because I just woke up, I hope that the perfect woman will love that too. I think I will feel the real love then. However, I look really awful when I have just woken up.”

[20151226] Yoo Yeon Seok’s Interview with M Magazine

What will happen if a successful and playboy sport agent meet a career woman who’s hesitant to entertain his advance during their journey to Busan? You will get the answer once Yoo Yeon Seok and Moon Chae Won’s new movie <The Mood That Day> premieres on 14 January 2016.

 photo mjoins9.jpg photo mjoins2.jpg
 photo mjoins10.jpg

In the interview for M Magazine, Yoo Yeon Seok explains more about Jae Hyun – his character in <The Mood That Day> – and his interpretation of the character. Jae Hyun, he said, is pretty much at the other side of his breakthrough character “Chilbong” from <Reply 1994, TvN>. Other than talking about Jae Hyun, he also gives more tidbits on his musical which is surprisingly tied with his traveling hobby.

 photo mjoins1.jpg photo mjoins8.jpg photo mjoins7.jpg

When he first met Director Jo, Yoo Yeon Seok was told that a man like him doesn’t have the vibe of a playboy but if he plays such role, women will certainly love him. He laughs and considers it as a compliment. That’s why he wants to bring out the many sides of Jae Hyun that he doesn’t have.

Later on, Yoo Yeon Seok first pointed out that Jae Hyun is a person who’s very open to women when he was asked about the difference between his and Jae Hyun’s personality. Being that very open to women is  exactly the thing that he could not do. He believes that women dislikes guys who’s so easy to ask them out. That’s why he tries to be closer to his castmate (Moon Chae Won) to avoid awkward atmosphere because such scenes are required in the movie.

Then how Yoo Yeon Seok studied for Jae Hyun’s character? He responded while laughing that he did his best. He said that he studied through friends about what women likes or their favorite things. He also contacted friend who is known to be not very shy with women. He also studied from a character called Ari Gold played by Jeremy Piven in an HBO drama called <Entourage>.

In shooting romantic comedy (movie), the relationship between him and Moon Chae Won is important. He was asked how’s the two off the camera. Yoo Yeon Seok spills out that both of them loves eating and had a restaurant tour together during the shooting. They ate 한우삼합 in Jangheung, Jeolla Province and eel shabu shabu in Yeosu.

 photo mjoins3.jpg

The discussion swings to the musical that Yoo Yeon Seok currently headlines, <The Man Who Walks Through Walls>. He reveals that in his early 20s, he travelled to the UK and was captivated by two famous musicals called <Fame> and <Phantom of the Opera>. Both musicals left strong impression on him. He even saved money intended for food to re-watch the musicals. So when the musical offer finally came, he agreed to do it.

So how’s his feeling when he finally performed on a musical stage for the first time? Yoo Yeon Seok admits that he was so nervous he totally forgot his own feeling (that day). He suffered from a sickness called ‘rhinitis’ that caused nasal voice due to runny nose but he is thankful that it didn’t affect his overall performance.

 photo mjoins4.jpg

What 2015 means to Yoo Yeon Seok?

He started off 2015 in the midst of shooting <The Mood that Day>. The shooting started in November 2014 and ran for 3 months. He didn’t stop (shooting) since. He filmed <Beauty Inside> which was opened on 20 August 2015 in the Czech Republic and later a drama <Warm and Cozy>. He exited the drama set only to join the filming of <Heohwa> which will open in 2016. Soon after, he is already busy for musical. Looking back, there was almost no break in between. While looking at his manager who sit on the set, he utters his wish to refrain himself from having a shooting marathon.

In October this year, Yoo Yeon Seok ventures into business with the opening of LUA lounge bar in Itaewon. He shrugs its importance by saying that it is not a big business. He jokingly said that LUA is kind of a hideout for him. But truth to be told, he envisioned LUA as a meeting place where he can invites people who work with him for a discussion. He personally designed the interior and is happy to hear that people like it. Yoo Yeon Seok himself enjoys making things, from cosmetics to furniture. But these days, he is into design interior. He is going through blogs on design interior or reading book to get the hang of it.

 photo mjoins5.jpg

The interview also takes Yoo Yeon Seok to go down the memory lane. Looking back to his 20s, he felt that there was some anxiety if he did not do anything. He also travelled extensively during those period. Not to mention his early career where indie movies became his channel to put a footprint as an actor. One of his early and memorable indie movies is <Re-encounter> which was released in 2011. Now, in his early 30s, he realizes that a pause is also needed in life.

 photo mjoins6.jpg

So what’s next for Yoo Yeon Seok?

The answer is <Heohwa> in which plays Kim Hyun Woo, a composer who is stuck in between two women played by Han Hyo Joo and Chun Woo Hee. He spills out that audience can expect passionate love triangle in the movie.

[Interview] Yoo Yeon Seok on His Musical Debut: It Feels Like Fate

Just a day after Yoo Yeon Seok officially debuted on the musical stage through “The Man Who Walks Through Walls”, playdb magazine released an interview with him as cover story. In the interview, Yoo Yeon Seok talks about all sort of things; from his professional musical debut and growth as an actor to the opening of LUA Lounge and his future plans. We summarized the interview and hopefully you will get the feeling of a little step closer to the actor we all admire.

 photo yysplaydb1.jpg

The interview is opened by little warning to all readers that the interview will be a lengthy one. But never mind that, because the man whom the magazine is interviewing is no less than a clever actor who knows what he is doing, what he wants to do and what goals he wants to achieve in the future. He is slowly building his popularity and reputation by playing numerous characters and is not afraid of new challenges. Now he’s up to a new challenge, becoming a musical actor.

As a new musical actor, Yoo Yeon Seok showcased singing ability for the first time during the showcase on 4 November 2015. He admitted that he was really nervous that day. It had been a while since the last time he felt that nervous in front of audience. Didn’t help much that his song was first in the order of performance. Usually, he acts in front of camera and he doesn’t have the need to face live audience. So when he finally up on the stage, he realized that training and live performance are completely two different things. He vowed from then on that he must prepare harder for the musical.

Yoo Yeon Seok continued on by telling his musical journey. He admitted that he always dreams of standing on the stage. There are a lot of things that you can only feel when you are on stage, he said. He did musical play once during college but he claimed it was not professionally staged. On the following years, he got too busy acting in front of the camera that the chances to do musical continued to be missed.

So when the offer to headline musical “The Man Who Walks Through Walls” came to him, it feels like fate. His agency, KingKong Entertainment, already told him that he could get some rest at the end of the year after completing packed schedules. But when he received the musical offer, he just could not let it pass by. So he decided to take it. It indeed feels like fate.

He describes the musical as a comic / fairy tale for adults. It is a story of love and love is continuously conveyed through songs. As the result, he felt that he will be challenged to convey emotions through metabolic rhythm and melody. He admitted that he doesn’t major in singing but he took up the musical challenge because he knows that emotions and love can be passed on through songs.

 photo yysplaydb2.jpg

On whether he and his character Dutilleul have something in common, he didn’t give a straightforward answer. He started off by giving a lengthy explanation about stages in life that people go through. People grows and changes. Like himself. He used to enjoy talking to people he barely knew and made new friendship. But as he continues his life by working as an actor / celebrity, walls are being built instead. He feels more comfortable in long-established friendship and doesn’t feel the urge to open up to new people. In that part, he feels that he resembles Dutilleul.

When he was asked of what to do if he’s able to walk through walls like Dutilleul, he said that he will use it on traveling. On one of his many travels, he queued for one hour only to enter a museum. So if he has Dutilleul’s ability, he will secretly walk through the walls of the museum to see just what he wants to see and doesn’t have to bother queuing. He totally fancies the idea of able to move around during traveling without tremendous constraints.

He then answered question about the most difficult part about practicing for musical. He pointed out that he has to sing 29 out of 41 songs performed in the musical. So imagine the amount of songs he has to perform during the weekend. There will be two shows in a day and each show will be staged for two hours. Let’s do some math. He need to sing a total of 58 songs in one day. HA. He jokingly compares himself to a pitcher who has to throw 100 – 150 pitches in one game. Two games during weekend meaning a pitcher will throw at approximately 300 pitches in one day.

As an actor who works in both movie and drama, he addresses question on the difference between working with cast mates on drama / movie set and musical. During the shooting of drama or movie, he said that cast mates often have different schedules. As the result, there is not much time to hang around with each other. The musical, on the contrary, requires all cast mates to stay at the same room and practice from morning until night together. The bonding is created due to intense practice. He used to have this kind of bonding during college so he admitted that he miss this kind of feeling. Cast mates in musical also exchange views on each other’s performance. It’s like having a live audience who give constant feedback for the better of the show. Everybody goes to the same direction. It’s different to drama or movie where feedback from other cast mates can be considered as an interruption. For Yoo Yeon Seok, this is a very welcomed change. When the musical finally starts, he believes that each performance will be reviewed during practice. On stage, it is the energy from the audience that keeps him going. As the result, he feels that musical allows him to develop and grow as an actor.

So much he cherishes his musical’s cast mates and crews, he presents them heartfelt gifts during pepero day. He presented pepero gift as well last year during movie shooting (red: The Mood That Day). But he wanted to give more this year. He initially planned to give pepero and an extra battery. Upon knowing that other cast mate picked battery as gift as well, he immediately switched gear. He choose tumbler with an engraved name.

Not long ago, Yoo Yeon Seok also invited all the cast and crew of his musical to his newly opened bar in Itaewon called LUA Lounge. He feels so happy to be able to have dinner together after practice.

The opening of LUA came as a surprise to many. Asked for how long he had LUA planned, Yoo Yeon Seok again took somehow a detour to answer it. He began by telling his early encounter with wine tasting and gifting. He was traveling in Portugal when he first tasted a very delicious wine. So delicious that he brought few bottles back to Korea. Since then, he has a habit of buying wine abroad and later gifts or shares it with his friends. The idea of LUA came as he wishes that more people are able to enjoy good food and taste good wine with friends in a place of great ambience. At the same time, he also wishes to have a corner where he can sit down to read / study scripts with good drinks as company. In addition, he wanted a place to meet his fans in more natural setting. So came LUA in Itaewon.

When Yoo Yeon Seok is asked about his other plan or dream, he expresses his wish to be able to do another musical in one or two years. If the musical is met with positive reviews, he would love to be on the stage again. As an actor, musical is now his training ground and he wishes to greet more audience in the future. For now, he settles with his hobby in design interior. In the future, he is thinking of surfing so he needs to learn how to surf again.

The interview ends with Yoo Yeon Seok conveying his feeling to audience who can’t hardly wait for his Duttileul. Given the short amount of preparation, he wishes that he can portray Duttileul convincingly in front of the audience. He gleefully asked the audience to come to the musical and check “how well Yoo Yeon Seok performs”. He also tries to convince the audience that the musical will be different from the previous season so he asks them to look forward to the musical with interest.

What made you want to become an actor?

When I was at elementary school third grade, I stood on the stage for the first time to perform during the school play. Although I was still young, the applause I received from the audience left a deep impression on me. Since then, I’ve always dreamed of becoming an actor.

12 years has passed since your debut, have you ever looked back at the roles you have been casted into (played) ?

I’ve never really reviewed the past works. But when I watch movies or dramas on the TV during holidays, sometime also on the cable television, it happens that my choice always goes to my own performances.

When choosing a role, is there any standard of what kind of character if it’s a drama (and) what kind of character if it’s a movie?

Personally, I prefer to give different images from the previous works. It suffers a lot to try different genres, but I am the type of person who finds nothing as fun and valuable than taking new challenge in each work.

Speaking of Yoo Yeon Seok-San’s (character), as it is still fresh in our mind, for sure the character you took in “Reply 1994” is deep-rooted, so I’d like to know what does that role mean to you?

The seniors at the agency always say that “the life of an actor starts at the age of 30. “Reply 1994” happened right around that timing and had growing up together with me. Fortunately the character was loved by many people, for myself, it also became the opportunity to achieve a new high. Also, what this movie means special to me is the fact of every actor in it started their life as an actor at the same time and had growing up together, just like me, which has given great opportunities to everyone, including me.

During the filming of “Reply 1994”, if there is any fun episode on the set, please tell us.

Well, there were lots of funny episodes, for sure. Particularly when filming, we just couldn’t help laughing out on many things. It was fine to retake with the actors at the same generation, however, when taking scene with Mr. Sung Dong Il, that was really difficult. There were many ad libs, and I didn’t know what kind of acting would showed up that I might break to laugh. So I was always feeling nervous. Especially during the filming of having meal together, we were working very very hard not to provoke laughter in each other (smile).

In variety “Healing Camp” you make cosmetic and furniture, you take pictures, do fishing and baseball as well, showing off a variety of talents. In the next work “Youth Over Flower”, you cook breakfast, take good care of friends like a mother to your friends. What kind of character were you when your childhood? Has there anything changed after you went for military service?

If anything, I think I take things seriously, yet I never think I’m any stricter or trouble person comparing to others. However, recently, I really heard that kind of talk surrounding me, again it might had occurred if I look back into my childhood but I probably didn’t realize it. For instance, I always do everything following the lead of others since childhood, which makes me feel worthful if I brought happiness to people. For sure, there are part of things that were changed in me thanks to the experience in the army. Before that, I’ve offen be late of class and fail the exams. But life in military serving as a driving soldier naturally made me a strict person (and) on time. After I left the army, I am very grateful that I was able to be the chief student with scholarship.

Variety “Youth Over Flowers” has been broadcasted on MNet since 20 April. When you suddenly had to leave for Laos, what kind of feeling did you have?

When I have to travel to somewhere, I am the type of person would prepare a detailed schedule before go on action. But in “Youth Over Flowers” I suddenly had to go filming, which really confusing me at the very beginning, to be honest. Yet, because it was precisely that kind of journey, up until now, I am happy that I was able to experience that. I had so much fun, not as actor Yoo Yeon Seok, one of the youth, but as Ahn Yeon Seok who had happy times, it was a good trip. Since I had no rest from continuous shooting, I felt that I got a vacation where I can feel refreshed.

In “Youth Over Flowers”, you traveled with “Reply 1994” co-stars Baro and Son Hojun. If it’s not because of the drama filming, would you like to travel abroad together?

With Baro and Hojun, we have been good friends from before, our bond became much deepened through this journey. We learned a lot about each other on things that we didn’t know before, which became unforgettable happy memories. Even after “Youth Over Flowers”, I am making time to meet with them. There are times when we rush to the filming location to support each other’s work, really as good friends. Becoming friends like this merely happened through work, it’s not rare right? In particular me and Hojun are of the same age, and we frequently meet up since we are in neighborhood. We also talk a lot on personal troubles.

Speaking of “Youth Over Flowers”, you were almost becoming like a mother during the trip, is there any episode that stays in your memory the most?

Usually in South Korea, you are supposed to avoid the raindrops when it is raining. But because Laos is so hot, the rain is very much welcomed. While driving on the off-road vehicle (and) covered in mud, even when it was raining, it was fun. Because these are things we rarely do in Korea, it is really a fun memory.

If “Youth Over Flowers” was to be filmed at other places besides Laos, where do you want to go and what kind of travel you want to try?

It is not my style to travel with the accompanying tour guide and determined schedule. I would prefer to decide my own schedule, because for me it is surprisingly troublesome to follow the course planned by other people…. If I have the freedom to travel in backpack, I think I will be able to freely add one night to try to visit places that were not decided before. For certain, personal touch is the charm of traveling. I love to travel in that way. If there is any place I want to go, Japan will be the first! I had go to Onsen in Hakone for couple of times with family. Next would be Osaka and Fukuoka before trying to go to other different areas. After that, I would like to go to America. I think everyone may have visited for at least once, while I haven’t yet. In fact, I haven’t got to meet my friend who lives there.

I heard that you are good friend to Kim Bum-san of the same agency. You might be barely see each other because you two are busy, but for those time you met each other, what kind of conversation would you have?

Since both of us are the earliest members of the agency, we share deep connection. As before, we really met often and made time to talk, but due to quite busy work recently, we barely hang out. Nevertheless, when we meet, we talk to each other and have discussion on troubles we have in acting.

The official fanclub is (finally) opened in Japan. Through the fanclub, what kind of appearance will you show to your Japanese fans?

Actually, I haven’t got much opportunity to meet with the Japanese fans until now. Even though, the Japanese fanclub was established upon the same timing as “Youth Over Flowers” being broadcasted in Japan. I am hoping to meet them often and create closer relationship with Japanese fans one step further than before. In Korea, lots of Japanese fans come to my signing event or fan meeting. From now on I am really hoping to be able to have wonderful new encounter in a new place through Japanese fanclub.

If you have the chance to come to Japan, what kind of thing you want to try? The food you want to eat, the kind of experience you want to do, if there is any please tell us.

I am looking forward to going to places full of snow like Sapporo to ski. Also to challenge myself for tuna fishing in the pasific ocean. Sailing on the ship across the ocean, making sushi from the fish I caught, maybe?.. (smile)

Lastly, please leave any message to the Japanese fans  Hello. This is actor Yoo Yeon Seok. From now on, I am hoping to be able to have a chance to get really really closer to Japanese fans, for you to be really happy, that is my biggest expectation. Now that we have Japanese official fanclub, please come visit often! ☺️

[ENG SUBBED] Section TV – Yoo Yeon Seok cut (20150118)

Back in January, Section TV managed to interview Yoo Yeon Seok while he was having his Beanpole Accessory 2015 S/S collection photoshoot.

He looked so beautiful and attractive in this particular interview (that hair, those shirts and that smile!) and the MC totally fangirled over him, too. Well, who wouldn’t, no? 😛

Since he played quite a number of athletic characters in the past, he was asked on how he manage his body figure and fangirl MC even suggested for him to act as a bodybuilder next time (for selfish interest), lol.

He was also asked whether one-sided love portrayals is his forte, his friendship with fellow Reply 1994 and Youth Over Flowers cast Son Ho Jun (those cuties!) and was embarrassed when his bad selfie skill was highlighted by the MC, haha.

So, here is the overdue subbed video (sorry for the delay).

[2014 Oct] Yoo Yeon Seok, the man who is successful because he is kind

In the drama <Reply 1994>, Chilbongie said “I’m ruined because I was nice.” However, in his movie <Whistle Blower>, his role Shim Minho changes the world by speaking the truth and promoting kindness and righteousness rather than cheating, egoism and opportunism. If it’s like that, how about the actor Yoo Yeon Seok? He is today’s hottest actor and is certainly successful through his 10 years of untiring endeavor. In 2003, he debuted on screen as the young character of Yoo Ji Tae in the movie <Old Boy>. He is never distracted and silently went through the road of acting. He who is successful because he is kind, Yoo Yeon Seok’s youth starts right now.

YOO YEON SEOK

He dreams of showing a different appearance every single time.

What was the reactions to your movie <Whistle-Blower>?

Everyone said they liked the movie. I also heard a lot of talks that it was a production that will make you do a lot of thinking after watching the movie. I felt really happy that the reactions were good.

After receiving the script, have you ever had a thought that you really have to do this movie?

I only have one reason. After <Reply 1994>, the thought of having to show a different appearance from Chilbong grew. In that sense, I thought that the ‘Shim Minho’ role of <Whistle Blower> has a quite different feel. I think it’s a complex reason. I’ve also decided to it because the scenario is interesting, and I wanted to work together with Director and Park Hae Il sunbae.

You’ve acquired a youthful image through <Reply 1994>. You could’ve chosen a trendy and bright one for your next production but you chose a serious one. You could’ve taken a relatively easier path. Is there a reason why you chose this path?

I think it’s hard to say which production is more easy or hard. I think the people who likes me, likes that I’m showing a different image in every production. In that sense, I want to show a different image, a rather opposite image of Chilbong. I think that I want to take filmography seriously as an actor than as a star.

You seem to have paid so much attention for building the whistle-blower character in the movie.

The big concern was ‘How will the Whistle Blower Shim Min Ho be able to tell the real truth?’. I thought a lot about how persuasive will I be able to act Shim Min Ho since he whistle blowed without any evidence. After thinking and thinking, I realized that the person who will be telling the truth should be calm without being vigorous and tricky. I also tried to be calm while acting, as much as possible, when I was saying the facts.

He wants to be called an actor rather than a star.

I feel a lot of intense concern about acting from you. Since when did you start dreaming of being an actor?

I participated in a play when I was in elementary. After the play has ended, I remember feeling very thrilled from the claps I’ve received at that young age. Since then, I wanted a work that interacts with other people, preparing something, showing it and receiving claps, while the viewers are enjoying. I think that I dreamt of being that kind of performer rather than precisely an actor.

Did you not feel pressured about working closely with your big (named) sunbaes?

They cared for me very well so that we could be comfortably act together. I was really excited and fluttering that I got to work together with the sunbaes I like. I worried more about how much I will be able to portray my role well in the movie, rather than character’s emphasis.

You seem to consider the diversity of filmography than the emphasis of character when choosing a role.

I tend to feel more interest on a role that I’ve never showed before. Same goes with genre. A production’s diverseness is a big factor. The actors you work together is also one of this. I’m not the type who sticks to just one standard to decide on a production. I tend to think on the overall factors.

Your forte seems to be a good and bad image at the same time and you can portray any role perfectly. What do you think are your strengths and weaknesses?

I think my strength is a sympathetic (character). Actually, I have a complex about my appearance not being easily remembered for one’s image. I wondered If I am dull… boring… But after having to act in various roles, rather than to strongly appeal in one image, it would be an advantage as an actor to act in various roles without being awkward. That’s how I started accumulating varieties of filmography.

You seem to have a lot of hobbies. You’ve had a photo exhibition too, and you put your artistic sense into good use. Have you ever thought of trying to do a different work?

I just want to keep doing what I like to do right now rather than doing a work too far from what I like to do. I started this work because I like acting. I do also like photography, but… I’d have to study about it more, to make it more than just a hobby.

It ain’t over till it’s over

It took you a long time to get to where you are right now, during the times when you were still an unknown actor, have you ever doubted and worried?

I have never felt doubts about being an actor, ‘not even just one moment’. Of course, I worried a lot and also had tough times, but there was never a time that I suddenly fall into despair and can’t do my production. Child roles, Supporting roles, Main roles… I thought of it as walking up the stairs step by step, so I didn’t feel a huge discouragement or doubt.

But still, as a person, I think that you could’ve had times when you break down or felt weak.

I don’t think I’ve ever break down, but there were times that I did felt anxious. As I had a gap (of when I didn’t have work), I worried about “Will ever get to do a production again?”. Everytime I was like that, I urged myself. The hyungs that I’ve also worked together told me that “Male actors start on their thirties. So don’t be too nervous about it.“. And I made effort to keep that in my mind.

You seem like a very positive person.

I think that thinking negatively is absolutely isn’t a help for me. Not only for me, but same goes for other people too. It’s so easy to think in a negative way if you see several things as tough. But luckily I’m the type who keeps working hard while thinking positively.

You’ve become the hottest actor right now. In the other interview, you said that you were worried and afraid that you would change. I’m curious about what points that Yoo Yeon Seok would avoid.

Anyone are bound to change if their environment have also changed. Moreover, the excitement and interest for me has really changed than it used to be. Upon realizing it, I thought that I might change in a negative way. I’m afraid. So I try my best so that I get a hold of myself and not change in a negative way. Of course, I will change too. I will keep changing. It’s only that, I want to keep showing everything that they know about me and the image that was the reason for the people to like my current self, without changing them.

You’ve mentioned the story about male actor starts on their thirties. Now that you are in your thirties, were there any changes on the way you see acting or your ethics on your work from your twenties?

It would be really nice if I could say that nothing changed about my ethics on work. It’s just that my responsibilities and the expectations for me has become bigger and discreet. In choosing a production, It’s all in the process and acting. When I was little, I worried about how I will be able to show an actor’s existence as ‘me’, but now it was how I will be in harmony with the production. I now tend to look in a bigger picture than before. And also, I’m not doing the work alone, but because it’s a teamwork together with dozens or hundreds of people, my own misjudgment could affect a lot of things so I also feel a lot of responsibility.

You can live a lifetime by just doing what you like

This question could be a little weird but… Do you find acting fun?

(Laughs) it’s fun. I’m doing it because I’m having fun, and I think I didn’t expect too much of things. If it wasn’t fun, I wouldn’t have continued on doing it in the past 10 years despite even not having special income. (Laughs) It’s not like I am designated for art. And because of that, I think it would be hard to do it if you don’t like it. Even though my job is an actor, I will live a lifetime thinking of it as ‘something I like’ and not as a ‘job’. Simply because I like it. Not just because someone asked me to do it.

There are actually a lot of people who does a work they don’t like.

It’s not bad to live like that. But I wish them to do what they like to do. Of course, I can’t live just doing only what I like either. But when picking a job, at least consider a field that you like… I think that it’s a waste to pick something that you don’t personally like. Even though my job is an actor, I will live a lifetime thinking of it as ‘something I like’ and not as a ‘job’. Simply because I like it. Not just because someone asked me to do it.

** Not sure if he really repeated those words again or it’s just the editor who repeated it. .__.

What kind of actor is a good actor to Yoo Yeon Seok?

That is a hard question… {Thinking for quite a while) Would it be proper to say a soulful actor? I could also say an actor who does workmanship. An actor should at least not allow his own soul to show when acting. Isn’t it hard to say an actor is good when he is not soulful and does not do everything he can while acting? In that sense, I think my future goal is to become like my sunbaes on Grandpa Over Flower. They’ve decided to do acting for life, and even now they are very dedicated to everything in acting and does it passionately. And until now they still challenge themselves. I think that you have to have those kind of qualities in order to have an image of an actor.

If as an actor, your ultimate goals are to be able to show various appearances and soulful acting, how about as a person, what are your ultimate goals?

I want to live my entire life while dreaming a new dream. I came this far even though it was hard, dreaming of my dream, which is ‘acting’, that until now I still like. I want to live just like that in the future. So that I could go on, even though there would be tough times, I’d be able to withstand it. I wish that I could be able to keep dreaming the dreams I like.
